Background of Tag Heuer

The modern TAG Heuer Company was created in 1985 when TAG, a company that manufactured high-tech products like Formula One turbochargers, acquired the Heuer Company.  In 1999, the TAG Heuer Company accepted a bid from Louis Vuitton which transferred 50.1% of TAG Heuer stocks to Louis Vuitton, making them the primary shareholder in the company. The Pendulum Concept was introduced by TAG Heuer in 2010 and it was the first magnetic oscillator that could restore torque without a hairspring. The 50th anniversary of the TAG Heuer Carrera was celebrated in 2013 and the racing-inspired watch still remains one of the most popular watches in the TAG Heuer line. There are a total of 10 generations of Carrera watches and since 1963, a new model has been launched every decade.

TAG Heuer has introduced some new models including the Carrera Calibre 360. This is the first wrist mechanical chronograph that displays time to 1/100th of a second. The Monaco V4 is another new model that features a movement powered by belts instead of gears. The Monaco 69 has a digital chronograph that is accurate to within a millisecond, along with a standard mechanical movement that is hinged so you can flip the watch to two different dials.

The lead designer for TAG Heuer is Christoph Behling. This London designer has been working with TAG Heuer since 2004. Since then, Behling has been responsible for some of the most popular pieces ever created by this company, including the Mikgrogirder 1/2000th. This is the fastest chronograph in the world and it was released in 2012.

Most of the watches created by TAG Heuer are chronographs. TAG Heuer announced in January of 2011 that it would release a new Career Mikrograph. This was the first watch created by TAG Heuer to have a Mikrograph movement inside the watch. This movement is accurate up to a 1/100th of a second.  In addition, the company released the Carrera MP4-12C a limited edition watch. This watch was created to celebrate the release of the McLaren MP4-12C. For more than 26 years, TAG Heuer has partnered with the McLaren F1 racing team.

In the 1971 movie Le Mans, Steve McQueen wore a blue TAG Heuer Monaco and it is now known as the McQueen Monaco. Jo Siffert, a Swiss Formula One racer often wore an Autavia model with a white dial and black registers.  In 1974, this company created a special Autavia with a black dial that was given out by the Viceroy Cigarette Company for a price of $88.  This version of the watch was called the Viceroy and advertisements for this special watch featured Parnelli Jones.
